Throughout his career, Prince redefined masculinity and was never afraid to tap into his femininity. He exemplified this mindset for a 1981 performance in Los Angeles, where he boldly took the stage in black bikini underwear, a fringed top and thigh-high stockings.(Photo: Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images)

Prince served up a lot of midriff during his illustrious career, but one of our favorite looks was this ab-baring top and low-cut pants pairing right here from 1986. Prince could wear anything and still be desired by both men and women. (Photo: Rob Verhorst/Redferns)

Prince, "Batdance" - Prince had the party rocking with his 1989 hit "Batdance," from the Batman soundtrack. In the video, Prince wore his favorite color and portrayed a face-painted "Gemini" whose two sides were good and evil representing both Batman and The Joker. The Purple One also recorded the entire album for the movie, which included the other hit singles "Partyman" and "Scandalous." Prince was so enamored with the Batman comic, he also put in his bid for the role of The Joker, which ultimately went to Jack Nicholson.  (Photo: Warner Bros.)

Always one to shock, he made a huge statement at the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards in this yellow lace bodysuit. It had strategic cutouts along the back, giving viewers a full look at his bare butt cheeks.(Photo: Frank Micelotta/Getty Images)

As Prince got older, his style was less about showing skin and morphed into more classic looks. But trust: It never lacked flare. Just peep this black-and-red striped suit and matching hat he donned the night he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. Always on point.(Photo: Frank Micelotta/Getty Images)

In the most recent years, it was clear that one of Prince's new fashion staples was wide-legged pants. Accepting the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2010 BET Awards, we can see how he put it all together. (Photo: Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images)

When it came to hair, we saw him work everything from a flowing, '70s-style blowout to a slicked-back crop. A masterfully coiffed Afro was the go-to for the 2015 Grammy Awards, a beautiful testament to his creative, empowered spirit. (Photo: Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images)
