Norman Lear - Legendary TV writer and producer Norman Lear is 'The Godfather of Classic Black Sitcoms.' Norman Lear - Legendary TV writer and producer Norman Lear is 'The Godfather of Classic Black Sitcoms.' Mike Evans and Damon Evans - The role of Lionel Jefferson was so vital to the sitcom it took two actors to play him. Mike Evans originated the character both on All in yhe Family in 1971 and The Jeffersons in 1975. When Mike left The Jeffersons to work on Good Times (a show he co-created), he was replaced by Damon Evans (no relation) for four seasons. Mike returned to The Jeffersons in 1979 and stayed with the series until 1981. He worked in real estate before sadly succumbing to cancer in 2006 at age 57.
