Pepper LeBeija became a star after being featured in the 1990 documentary Paris Is Burning. Pepper's background is in the Black and Latino ballroom scene (mother of the House of LeBeija), a subculture known for family, fashion and voguing — made famous years before Madonna. In 2003, Pepper passed away at 53 years old, but he is known as an "icon" in the ballroom circuit and beyond. (Photo: Miramax Films)

Dorian Corey was also featured in the doc Paris Is Burning. Known for his talent and wisdom, Corey's most quotable line in the doc was, "Shade is I don't tell you you're ugly but I don't have to tell you because you know you're ugly... and that's shade." Corey passed away in 1993 but he made headline news when a mummified body was found in a trunk of his home. Investigators determined the body had been dead for about 15 years. There was a note attached to the body that read: "This poor soul broke into my apartment and I was forced to shoot him." (Photo: Academy Entertainment, Off White Productions, Miramax Films)
