1983: Diane Downs - Diane Downs, an Oregon mother, shot three of her children, one of whom died, and told police a stranger had attempted to carjack her and had shot the children. 1994: Susan Smith - Susan Smith claimed that her sons were kidnapped by a Black man, but in 1995 she was convicted, after she confessed, of murdering her 3-year-old and 14-month-old by driving them into a lake. 2001: Andrea Yates - Andrea Yates drowned her five children in her Houston, Texas, bathtub in 2001. She then laid them side by side in bed.  Yates' 2002 capital murder conviction was overturned by an appeals court because of false testimony by the state's expert psychiatric witness. In 2006  a Texas jury found that Yates was not guilty by reason of insanity. She was committed by the court to the North Texas State Hospital, Vernon Campus, where she was a roommate of Dena Schlosser, who had killed her infant daughter. 2005: China Arnold - Ohio resident China Arnold was originally found guilty in 2008 of killing her 28-day-old daughter Paris Talley by cooking her in a microwave oven. However, due to prosecutorial misconduct, that verdict was overturned and a new trial ordered. In May 2011 she was found guilty of aggravated murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole.
