Black Twitter Celebrates Rev. Raphael Warnock’s Historic Georgia Senate Win
Rev. Raphael Warnock is the projected winner of the Georgia Senate runoff, unseating GOP Sen. Kelly Loeffler and Black Twitter is overjoyed.
The senior pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church will be the eleventh Black Senator in the country's history and first Black Democratic ever elected to the South. There have only been three Black Senators elected in the South, but they were all Republicans. Hiram Revels was elected in 1870 in Mississippi and Blanche Bruce in 1875, also in Mississippi. However, this was a different Republician, known as the party of Civil Rights at the time.
Tim Scott (R-SC) was elected in 2013. He campaigned for David Perdue who is now trailing behind Democrat Jon Osoff.
Warnock said in his victory speech, “I come before you as a proud American and a son of Georgia. My roots are planted deeply in Georgia soil.”
The tally after midnight on Wednesday, Jan. 6 had Warnock with 50.5% of the vote and Loeffler with 49.5% of the vote. A CBS News exit poll shows that Warnock received 92% of the Black vote, 66% of the urban vote and 67% of the vote from Georgia voters under the age of 30.
