WATCH: Rev. Raphael Warnock’s Victory Speech Following Georgia Senate Run-Off
After CBS News and many other media outlets projected that Democratic candidate Rev. Raphael Warnock had defeated incumbent Republican Sen. Kelly Loeffler, the new Senator-elect took to his social media pages to deliver a victory speech on Wednesday (Jan. 6).
Warnock makes history as Georgia’s first Black senator.
“I come before you as a proud American and a son of Georgia. My roots are planted deeply in Georgia soil,” the proud graduate of Morehouse College and pastor of Martin Luther King Jr.’s Ebenezer Baptist Church said.
The tally after midnight on Wednesday, Jan. 6 had Warnock with 50.5% of the vote and Loeffler with 49.5% of the vote. A CBS News exit poll shows that Warnock received 92% of the Black vote, 66% of the urban vote and 67% of the vote from Georgia voters under the age of 30.
“To EVERY Georgian who marched with us, organized with us, prayed for us, fought for us, believed in us or shared their story and their pain with us—thank you for all your love and support,” he continued. “In the words of Dr. King, who grew up just blocks from where I stand tonight, “We are tied in a single garment of destiny, caught up in an inescapable network of mutuality. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”
The Senate results come two months after President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris won the White House. The Georgia senate election went to a runoff because none of the four candidates received more than 50 percent of the vote.
The race between Democratic candidate Jon Ossoff and Republican incumbent Sen. David Perdue has been deemed too close to call by numerous news outlets.
If Democrats win both seats, there will be a 50-50 tie with Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, the president of the Senate, as the tie-breaking vote.
Loeffler has not yet conceded.
Warnock appeared on Good Morning America today and discussed the importance of developing a national strategy to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.
