What We Know About 64-Year-Old Las Vegas Mass Shooting Suspect Stephen Paddock

His brother is "dumbfounded" by the attack and says he must've "snapped or something."

The mass shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas, which has left 50 dead and hundreds injured, has devastated and shocked the country. The questions surrounding the motive and background of shooter Stephen Paddock, 64, have left many confused.

Here's what we know about the 64-year-old suspect.

  • Paddock, who was a local resident, fired down on a crowd from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel

Police said Paddock was firing from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel just outside the concert area. During an encounter with a police SWAT team, Paddock turned one of his guns on himself, said police.

  • He had a companion who worked for one of the casinos, and Paddock recently gambled in Las Vegas

Las Vegas police told CBS News that he had recently been gambling at the Mandalay Bay Casino. While gambling, Paddock used Marilou Danley’s ID at a “slot club.” Undersheriff Kevin McMahill told CBS that there was a “gaming club, slot club, that casinos use and he was at one point using that card to gamble with. We know he’s been gambling.”

Police said Danley, 62, lived with the shooter in Mesquite. Public records show she had lived at the same address as him since January 2017. CNN reports that she has been cleared of any involvement in the shooting.

  • The suspect's brother, Eric Paddock, said he was 'dumbfounded' by Stephen's actions

Eric Paddock, the gunman’s brother, who lives in Florida, told the Daily Mail the family is “dumbfounded” and there was “absolutely no indication he could do something like this.”

He also said Stephen had no political or religious affiliation and “he was just a guy. Something happened, he snapped or something.”
