CINCINNATI (AP) — The University of Cincinnati plans an independent review of police department policies after one of its officers fatally shot a man whose car was missing a license plate.

In a statement Monday, the school says it is hiring an independent reviewer to go over police policies and procedures.

Forty-three-year-old Samuel Dubose was killed on July 19.

His death comes amid months of national scrutiny of police dealings with African-Americans, especially those killed by officers. Dubose is black. The officer is white. Authorities haven't indicated whether race is a part of the investigation.

Florida attorney Mark O'Mara has been retained to represent the Dubose family's interests. O'Mara defended former neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman in Trayvon Martin's fatal shooting.
