Las Vegas Judge Says B.B. King Is Not Being Abused

No evidence found to substantiate claims.

B.B. King is not being neglected and abused by his manager, Laverne Toney, a Las Vegas judge ruled Thursday, throwing out the case filed by one of the blues pioneer’s daughters.

No evidence was found to substantiate the allegations, Clark County Family Court Hearing Master Jon Norheim said. Investigations were conducted last October and in April by police and social services. Toney will maintain power-of-attorney over King.

The battle surrounding King involves finances as well as medical care. Karen Williams, one of his 11 surviving children, says that an “excess” of $1 million is missing from her father’s bank account and there are millions at stake.

Williams filed legal documents in late April accusing Toney of blowing through her father’s money and alienating him from family. Another daughter called police last month after Toney reportedly refused to admit him to a hospital.

King is currently in hospice care after suffering a minor heart attack.

Three of the children says he’s being mistreated. His eldest daughter, Shirley King, says the dispute has been ongoing. "I'm not too sure things are right. But my dad would never want this," she said, explaining that the situation is disrespectful to her father. "I'm crying about what people are doing,” she said. “I’m afraid it might get ugly.”
