Zoe Kravitz Just Admitted Something Really Surprising About Her Personal Style
Zoe Kravitz constantly tops best dressed lists and she’s always lauded for her inimitable style, yet let her tell it, she’s hardly a slave to fashion. In fact, the 27-year-old proudly set the record straight in her cover story interview for the March issue of Teen Vogue.
“You can tell when someone is driven by labels. If something is couture they think it’s important and wear it and sometimes make a terrible fashion mistake,” she told fashion designer Alexander Wang, who interviewed her for the piece. “People are shocked that I know so little about designers. I know the big ones because my grandmother wore them or they’ve been around forever. I know you [Wang] because you’re my best friend, but I don’t know much about the fashion world except for when I like something, I like it.”
But Kravitz, who is currently the face of Calvin Klein and Balenciaga, has been known to rock some covetable designer pieces, so long as they work with her grunge-glam aesthetic. In her photo spread, she's draped in cozy separates from Dior, Valentino, Saint Laurent by Hedi Slimane and her BFF Wang.
It’s hard not to believe that she was just born with panache; her parents are Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet, after all. Kravitz and Wang swapped some telling stories about the actress/singer’s sartorial evolution from DIY to high-fashion. For example, there’s the time she cut open a vintage pair of heels because her feet hurt and when she commandeered a brown paper bag as a makeshift purse. Ribbing her gently for those quirks, Wang still praised her for her “ease and nonchalance about approaching things” and summed her style up in one word: cool.
“Everyone is looking at everyone else to see what’s cool,” the Allegiant star said. “So it’s just all about a level of confidence. When anyone sets out to be cool it becomes contrived. Cool just means “I agree with this in this moment." People thought acid-washed was cool, and it wasn’t cool — it was cool then. So it really is a moment of acceptance. It’s superficial that people think I’m cool because I wear certain clothes and I have tattoos. The funniest part is, when they get to know me, they’re always surprised by how nerdy I am.”
