Zoe Kravitz Loves Being a 'Brown Girl With Natural Hair'
We’ve come to love Zoe Kravtiz’s signature braids, but did you know her hairstyle came about as a joke? In her cover story for California Style magazine, the singer/actress opened up about exuding confidence through style and embracing her roots.
“I originally did them as a joke, like an ode to the ’90s,” she says. “They aren’t some symbolic thing, but it still feels important, I think, to be a brown girl with natural hair. You see blond girls with the same hair in every movie.”
Kravitz — who is an unlikely mix of Russian Ashkenazi Jewish, African-American, Caribbean, and American — said she looks for roles that resonate with her rather than “auditioning for roles for white girls just to prove a point.”
“I think there was a point when I resisted being categorized,” she said. “I got past that and started to really dig deeper and learn more about my roots. I identify as everything, and am proud and connected to the rich history that I come from.”
She also uses fashion to express herself, and as the child of the coolest parents around, Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet, it’s clear that the apple didn’t fall far from the tree.
“Fashion really inspires me and always has,” said Kravitz, who mentioned that Dior and Alexander Wang are her favorite designers. “It triggers all kinds of memories and ideas and associations. It’s just the biggest F.U. when you have confidence and you’re wearing something crazy.”
