NeNe Leakes's Sitcom Protested By Anti-Gay Group

New Normal show creator Ryan Murphy counters that the group “would love” the series.

NeNe Leakes has once again found herself in a swirl of drama and, although not directly related to her personally, it surrounds the new sitcom she’s starring in this fall season.

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that an ultra-conservative group called One Million Moms is protesting the new Ryan Murphy series, The New Normal. The series centers on a gay male couple having their first child via a surrogate. Leakes plays series regular character Rocky, assistant to one of the dads-to-be.

In a letter posted on its website, the group says: “OMM is prepared to contact any and all sponsors of this program if it is aired…Millions of Americans strongly believe that marriage should be between one man and one woman. NBC’s The New Normal is attempting to desensitize America and our children. It is the opposite of how families are designed and created...this program is damaging to our culture.”

Murphy, an openly gay man who created the hit television series Glee and Nip/Tuck, took the flack in stride and added that the OMM would enjoy the series because their opinions are represented. “I think if they watch the show, I actually think they would love it,” Murphy told audiences at the NBC Summer Press tour in Los Angeles. “Ellen Barkin’s character [on the show] is a member of Million Moms!...their points of view are delivered with sensitivity and a certain amount of voracity by Ms. Barkin…She will protest people and events and I think it will be great fodder for [our] characters to talk about.”

Now, just get NeNe in the mix and it will be game on.
