VMAs 2021: Here Are The Best Moments From This Year’s Show

We break down all the fun, rocking performances, and legendary moments from one of the biggest nights in music.

MTV has done it again. The annual Video Music Awards includes some of today’s biggest names in music as well as legends in the industry. The 2021 MTV VMAs are back live from Brooklyn, NY with a show that will leave fans of all ages wanting more.

  • Busta Busted It Up

    Busta Rhymes and Spliff Star have been performijng together for over 20 years and whack performances are not in their vocabulary. When you have hit after hit after hit and can spit like Busta, there's nothing but a good time to come on stage. This was the moment of the night for true hip hop heads. 

  • Lil Nas X Wins Video Of The Year

    Lil Nas X won the coveted Video of the Year for his no. 1 song “Montero (Call Me by Your Name).” An excited X jumped on the stage to accept his award and said, "First, I want to say thank you to the gay agenda! Thank you, gay agenda!"
    He also plugged his album, MONTERO, which drops Sept. 17.

     

  • Travis Scott Wins Best Hip Hop Video

    Travis Scott was awarded best hip hop video for "Franchise" featuring Young Thug and M.I.A.
     In his acceptance speech, he shouted out his first daughter Stormi in his acceptance speech. The 30-year-old is expecting his second child with Kylie Jenner.

  • Doja Cat and SZA Win Best Collaboration

    Doja Cat and SZA won best collaboration for their song "Kiss Me More." They beat out Cardi B, Drake, Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber 

    Doja Cat, who is also hosting,  acknowledged her outfit during her acceptance speech, "I look like a worm.  That's dope. I never thought I'd be dressed as a worm while accepting an award."

  • Have Mercy Chlöe

    Chlöe Baily proved not only can she do a solo performance and kill it, but the "Have Mercy" singer buried it, said a prayer, and dusted the dirt onto the MTVstage. Her performance is one of the most memorable of the night. #BootySoBig

  • Montero is A Vibe

    Lil Nas X is known for slaying award shows and he did not disappoont tonight. He served everything from marching band realness to jail house rock blues all while delivering an important message. And we seeyour Jack Harlow and all your realness.

  • Billy Porter introduced Lil Nas X and said when he was first coming up in this industry, the people were not ready for all this "Black boy joy." He introduced the slayage of this performance. 

  • Latto Got Big Energy

    It’s the ponytail for days for us.

  • Justin Bieber And Giveon Win

    Justin Bieber and Giveon win the Best Pop VMA for their track “Peaches," which also included Daniel Caesar. They managed to beat out  24kGoldn, Cardi B, Doja Cat, Miley Cyrus and Drake. The song is from his no. 1 album Justice, which was released in March of 2021. Bieber is also up for Artist of the Year.

  • There's A Whole Lot Of Bia Coming

    We found out from our BET.com correspondents that BIA has new music coming. The singer told us on the red carpet that the song is an "ode to trust in yourself, be authentic to yourself. I have a deluxe album coming out next month. It's really exciting!"

  • Hometown Girl Comes Home

    J.Lo was one of the first surprises of the night returing for a good time in her hometown. She presented this year's nominees for Best Song of the Year, which went to Olivio Rodrigo.

  • Doja Is Tonight's #1 Host

    Doja Cat is the official host of this year's show and will also give a killer performance later tonight. 

  • Madonna opens the show

    The 2021 VMAs opened with the queen of MTV herself. Madonna surprised the crowd with video if her walking throughout Times Square to end with her walking onto the VMA main stage. The concept of videos on television started some 40 years ago when Madge got her first start in the business. The two of them have literally grown together.
