There’s A Rick James Biopic Series In The Works
The life of legendary singer Rick James is set to be featured in a new biopic series.
Deadline reports that Universal Studio Group’s UCP is working on a project called Super Freak, which will be a limited series focusing on James’ life and career. The publication describes it as a “funkadelic mix of music biopic and true crime.”
Ty James, the singer's daughter, is set to serve as the series' executive producer, and Randy McKinnon, most known for writing 2018’s Where the Water Runs, is set to write.
Mike Sager, who profiled James for Rolling Stone in 1995 and remained friends with James until he died in 2004, is also set to assist on the project.
"We are truly ecstatic about this new project with UCP and extremely excited to work with the writer Randy McKinnon," said Ty James in a statement. "We are confident he can give the fans exactly what they have been waiting on, plus some."
This will be a magic carpet ride, with ups and downs, joys and pain — a story of perseverance and tenacity, with the music being the greatest navigation system,’ she continued. “Get ready for the ride of your lives — the story of James A. Johnson, aka Rick James."
