2020 VMAs: The Weeknd, Megan Thee Stallion, And Doja Cat Take Home Top Awards

During his acceptance speech, The Weeknd called for justice for Jacob Blake and Breonna Taylor.

The 2020 MTV Video Music Award aired last night (Aug. 30) and a number of music’s biggest stars brought their fans some much-needed respite from the coronavirus.

  • Following an emotional opening from multihyphenate Keke Palmer where she paid tribute to Chadwick Boseman, who passed away after a four year long battle with colon cancer, The Weekend kicked off the night with his chart-topping hit, “Blinding Lights” from the Hudson Yards in New York. His stage was followed by memorable performances from Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, DaBaby, Doja Cat and more.

Gaga led the pack with five awards wins last night, bringing her career total to 18 VMAs, according to Billboard, placing her just behind Beyoncé and Madonna who have 24 and 20 accolades, respectively.

  • The hip-hop and R&B community walked away with a few big wins as well. The Weeknd took home awards for both Video of the Year and Best R&B for “Blinding Lights.” While accepting the trophies, the R&B crooner delivered a short yet poignant 20-second speech.

“It’s really hard for me to celebrate and enjoy this moment so I’m just going to say justice for Jacob Blake and justice for Breonna Taylor,” he said.

  • Doja Cat was declared Best New Artist amid a meteoric rise that culminated in her first No. 1 hit with her Nicki Minaj-assisted “Say So” remix in May. “Damn I love yall” she tweeted out later that night.

  • Though she did not perform, Megan Thee Stallion took home the award for Best Hip-Hop. The Houston rapper virtually accepted the Moon Person with a video message to her loyal fanbase and MTV.

“Thank you Hotties! Thank you, MTV! Oh my gosh, I can’t believe I’m Best Hip-Hop,” she gushed with a giggle. “Thank y’all for real. This is my second Moonman. Definitely not my last. We gon’ keeping turning up.”

  • R&B singer H.E.R. received “Video For Good” for her protest anthem, “I Can’t Breath.” She released the song in June in the wake of the police killing of George Floyd. Still dreaming!!! But it’s not about me, it's about the movement,” H.E.R. wrote of the moment on Instagram along with a video message.
