Lil Nas X’s ‘Old Town Road’ Dethroned After Record-Breaking 19 Weeks On The Chart

The feat came with another first.

It looks like Lil Nas X’s chart-topping smash single that fortuitously transcended history has reached the end of the road. “Old Town Road"’s record-breaking reign atop of Billboard’s Hot 100 chart ended on Monday (Aug. 19) when another single replaced it.

  • The country-remix dominated the charts for an unprecedented 19 weeks straight until Billie Eilish’s sleeper hit “Bad Guy” booted it from the top spot. “Bad Guy” set another record as the longest song to hold the runner-up spot after it spent nine weeks hovering at No. 2 before it overtook Lil Nas’ song.

It also marked Billie’s first song to ever go number one, and the 17-year-old singer is the first artist from Generation Z (she was born in 2001) to have a chart-topping single, according to Billboard.

  • Before abdicating the throne, Lil Nas X blew everyone’s mind with another revelation about 'Old Town Road.'

“Old Town Road was made on the producer kio’s birthday, went number one on my birthday, and left number one the week of billy ray’s birthday,” Lil Nas pondered on Twitter.

While that sinks in, Lil Nas’ country-trap remix is still holding on. The song slid to third place behind Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes’s “Senorita.”

  • Lil Nas took his dethronement graciously and penned his congratulations to Billie, tweeting, "u deserve this!!” In true Lil Nas fashion, the rapper didn’t pass up an opportunity to slip in a hilarious meme, even at his own expense, to mark the occasion.

“me when columbia drop me from the label because billie eilish took the number 1 spot,” the 20-year-old rapper joked alongside posting a gif of Squidward from Spongebob Squarepants begging for change on the side of the road.

  • Country icon Billy Ray Cyrus also sent Billie his congratulations on Twitter and bowed out with a sweet message for Lil Nas.

"Congratulations @billieeilish Well deserved. Your persistence paid off," Cyrus wrote. "Thanks everybody. It was a hell of a ride."

  • Indeed, it was.
