Big Sean Returns With His First Single In Two Years, And Fans Are Hype AF For New Music

The single is the Detroit emcee’s first in two years, leaving fans with one question…

Big Sean has largely been absent from the music scene for a minute save for appearances on DJ Khaled’s chart-topping blockbuster, Father of Asahd, and most recently, fellow Detroit spitter Kash Doll’s single “Ready Set.”

  • Now the G.O.O.D Music emcee is back and has fans going crazy on social media. Earlier this week, Big Sean dropped a series of back-to-back teasers showcasing the new music he has been teasing since March with a simple proclamation that he was “ready” to step back into the spotlight with a solo release. He followed that up by dropping a video of himself cooking up a song in a studio.

  • His fans barely had a day to mentally prepare for his first solo single in two years before the Mercy rapper blindsided them with his latest song. “My GOD it’s been a while since I dropped something, Let’s goooo! mandatory listen, tune in... almost time!!!” he announced on Twitter followed by link to the song.

“I just been feeling like it’s all clicking / Like it’s all working out / and I’m about to work out,” he ponders in the intro before we hear him rap about his depression seconds later with a possible reference to his split from Jhene Aiko, who dropped her own deep cut earlier this year.

"S**t, I didn’t take a break my nigga / I broke/ Broke my heart, broke my soul, don’t cry for me though / If you don’t break nothing down then it's no room to grow / One mental block lead to another, s**t it's dominos / Mixtape Sean, but I’m in album mode," Sean starts off before launching into a spitfire rampage of one hard-hitting bar after another as he hits back at those who counted him out.

  • In a seven-minute interview with Zane Lowe of Beats 1 for the world premiere of the single, Sean shared how this record was an embodiment of him rediscovering himself and getting back to his roots.

"At one point I felt like it might have started to become like a burden, or like work, but now it's just fun. So this is just me having fun bro, expressing myself. It was a time well spent,” Sean told Lowe. “I never really knew how important it was to take some time for myself and get myself right. That's something you can't really put on a time schedule. But you know, throughout that whole time I've been working on music, so it is good to get it out. It is good for people to just finally see where we are on because I got so much just ready for the world.”

Fans are celebrating the return of Big Sean and are hype that this means there will be a follow-up to his 2017 record, I Decided. An album has all but been announced at this point, so it seems like it's just a matter of time. Meanwhile, fans are using the unexpected release to remind folks to put some respect on Sean’s pen game.
