Premiere: OG Maco Flexes His Self-Made Pay Day For ‘I Gotta Check’
In 2014, OG Maco catapulted to rap’s big leagues in just one swing with his viral, Billboard chart-peaking debut single, “U Guessed It.”
He’d already landed a spot on Quality Control Music a month prior, which is sprinkled with other trap music notables like Migos, 2 Chainz and Zaytoven, followed by a seat in the XXL 2015 Freshman Class beside Fetty Wap, Vince Staples and Def Loaf. Despite being surrounded by so many various, distinct talents early in his industry stardom, however, Maco preserved his individuality and played the hip-hop rules his way with a slew of EP and mixtape releases at his own will.
Consider his first single of 2018, “I Gotta Check” a reminder of that.
Maco takes full advantage of the trap world’s favorite sonic sensation, autotune, to enhance the moody, yet swaggy, single. It’s more proof that the spirit of his ATL breeding grounds is not lost upon him, along with lines like, “These n**gas cappin I only spit facts.” He keeps the lyrical focus on his rag to riches testimony, priding himself on being able to spot his mother about as much money as the next hip-hop record label signee’s advance and giving as much love to the haters as he does to the fans.
“I Gotta Check goes with a quote I firmly believe in,” Maco said of the new single. “A wise man once said ‘Rich is Gangsta.’ So I listened.”
The single spends little to no time on violence, drugs, or any other vices, but instead raps praise to the rewards of putting your mind to the money. And it’s all Maco needs to cut the check, and keep the rest of them coming.
