Hip Hop Awards 2023: 5 Fascinating Facts About Cypher Performer Lady London

The rising star delivered a razor-sharp performance during this year’s ceremony.

Female rappers have undeniably taken center stage in the hip-hop scene this year, and their prowess continued to shine brightly at the “BET Hip Hop Awards” 2023 cyphers. Led by “Rock The Bells Cultural Influence Award” recipients Timbaland and Swizz Beatz, the lyrical showcase featured a lineup of outstanding artists, including the remarkable rapper Lady London.

Hailing from New York but with roots in Jersey, Lady London rose to fame thanks to singles such as "Lisa's Story" and "Money Over,"  which showcased her exceptional storytelling abilities. Since then, she has steadily carved out her niche in the industry, collaborating with acts such as Dreezy and Ciara.

During “BET Hip Hop Awards” 2023, cypher London held her own as she rapped amongst some exceptionally talented acts, including Lola Brooke, Gloss Up, and the legendary Bun B. To fully appreciate this year's cypher performer, Lady London, dive into her world with these five fascinating facts.

  • She’s an island girl

    Lady London is the daughter of a Jamaican mother and Trinidadian father. Growing up, the aspiring artist spent her time between the Bronx and East Orange, New Jersey.

  • Her fashion style is inspired by being boss

    While speaking with REVOLT, the star opened up about her style noting that “A lot of it has to do with being a boss. ‘Boss Lady’ is the mantra of it. Being a lady, in general, is important for me, so I try to keep it very queen-aesthetic: very avante-garde, very editorial, just clean for the most part.”

  • She fell in love with poetry at the age of 11

    “I was a little bit of a rebel kid and a violent kid,” she told Girls United in an interview last year.  “I used poetry as an outlet to speak about my anger and what was bringing me in these spaces. I think that was the catalyst for it, if anything.”

  • She traded in a white coat for a mic

    Before taking her music career seriously Lady London attended Howard University. She was pursuing her Bachelor of Science in sports medicine and chemistry.

  • She’s written music for television

    Aside from rapping, Lady London  has also earned songwriting credits for the character Lil Muffin on ABC’s “Queens.” She is also credited as a contributor on the soundtrack for Sanaa Lathan’s film “On The Come Up.”
