'Girls Trip' Set a Box Office Record With Its Black Girl Magic
Girls Trip firmly held down the comedy front during its opening weekend, delivering a massive total of $30.4 million. With these numbers, the film walks away with the title of largest opening weekend performance of any live-action comedy this year, thus far.
The undoubted fan-favorite comedy of the weekend, which follows Regina Hall, Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett-Smith and Tiffany Haddish during an epic "no boys allowed" — of sorts — adventure through Essence Festival, showed that R-rated comedies can be box office smashes in their own right.
In addition to getting the public's stamp of approval, the film also scored an "A" on CinemaScore and an 89 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
With its commendable opening weekend numbers, the film lands in the No. 2 position behind the more widely distributed Dunkirk, which raked in $51 million.
