Uzo Aduba has been a longtime ally of the LGBT community, and while she has spoken out about this in the past, she recently explained her disappointment in her homeland of Nigeria, which is known for its homophobic reputation. A recent poll found Nigeria as the most homophobic country on the planet, with 98 percent of its population opposed to homosexuality. There are also anti-LGBT laws across the country.

Speaking with The Advocate, the Orange Is the New Black star said she isn't proud of how the Nigerian people are tackling the issue of homophobia, especially since they are a "loving people."

"Nigerians are a very loving, caring, thoughtful people," she said. "But we don't always get it right, and we're getting it very wrong on this particular issue. I know our hearts are supremely good, so I hope that eventually aligns with how we perceive and treat gay issues."

The actress said being a part of Orange, one of the most diverse shows in popular culture at the moment, has taught her so much about LGBT issues, specifically as it relates to the transgender community: "I've definitely gained a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the trans conversation," she said. "I didn't know anything about the murder rates of trans women of color and the health care issues that trans people face. In fact, Laverne Cox was the first trans person I'd ever met, and now I've met so many, which is amazing."

The fourth season of Orange Is the New Black premieres on June 17 on Netflix.
