Why 'Rampage' Director Brad Peyton Wants The Rock To Run For President

Plus, why he'll do anything Michael B. Jordan says.

Rampage director Brad Peyton knows when something is working. The 39-year-old hit pay dirt in 2012 when he directed the action adventure sequel Journey 2: The Mysterious Island starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Grossing $335 million worldwide, it was a no-brainer for Peyton and Johnson to team up again in 2015 for the disaster flick San Andreas. With The Rock starring as a rescue copter pilot, San Andreas hovered its way to $155 million domestic gross continued a great working relationship with the former wrestler.

To follow that achievement, the two have teamed up again for more building-breaking mayhem in Rampage, based on the 1986 arcade game where oversize beasts crush buildings like Snoop in a Dogg Pound video. Confidence is high in this partnership, as Peyton has already signed on to work on a sequel to San Andreas with The Rock.

BET caught up with Peyton to talk about the presidential aspirations of his star, disgruntled peers, thematic coincidences and honorary membership in Wakandan tribes.

There is scene in the Rampage trailer where The Rock is again in a helicopter. When you go to work with Mr. Johnson, do you think, ‘We have to get him to the choppaaa'?

It totally happened by accident on this one. It was going to be a motor bike. Long story short, I had way too much movie and not enough money and time and was like, ‘What are we gonna do?’ And I said I know how to shoot a helicopter with The Rock in it and The Rock was like, ‘I know how to fly a helicopter in your movies,' so we put those two babies together and came up with a helicopter in this movie.

Is that going to be a thing for you guys going forward?

I’d rather evolve to hover craft or spaceship because I’ve never done either of those. Or a unicorn.

Should The Rock run for president?

Yes, because I would love to ride on Air Force One with The Rock as president.

Based on his characters, what kind of president do you think he’d make?

The best one. The coolest one. The toughest one. I think it would be more like hey we have this issue, let’s arm wrestle. And he’s going to win.

Speaking of issues, another director, Uwe Boll, has taken offense at you naming your movie Rampage, because he has several movies named Rampage.

It’s based on a video game called Rampage. I’ve never met Mr. Boll. I found his quote wildly entertaining, and I’m sorry he’s upset. But I just called it what the game was called. Because it’s based on the game.

Have you seen Black Panther?

Oh, yeah.

Can we petition to have your giant albino Gorilla George get honorary membership in the Jabari Tribe?

Done. Sold. I’ll do anything Michael B. Jordan says. 100 percent. Especially since he had the gold teeth. Whatever that guy wants to do, I’m in.

Well, Michael wasn’t in the Jabari, that was Winston Duke.

I want him to come into the Jabari. When George comes in I also want to get Michael B. Jordan in.

Rampage is in theaters Friday April 13.
