BET Awards 2024: Our Favorite BET Awards Moments From Host Taraji P. Henson

Culture’s biggest night returns on Sunday, June 30, at 8 PM.

The BET Awards have always been a highlight in the cultural calendar, celebrating the best in Black music, entertainment, movies, and philanthropy, and when it comes to hosting, actress Taraji P. Henson has proven time and again that she’s not only a talented actress but also an incredible host.

As a seasoned master of the craft, Henson has gifted viewers with a treasure trove of entertainment and laughter. Over the years, the Hollywood veteran has effortlessly steered the ship, weaving through award wins and star-studded performances. This year, the Golden Globe-winning actress is poised to grace the stage for the third time, hosting the BET Awards 2024, a live event from Los Angeles, CA, on Sunday, June 30th, at 8 PM.

As we eagerly await culture’s biggest night, we’re taking a trip down memory lane, revisiting some of Taraji’s most side-splitting moments on the BET Awards stage.

  • Taraji P. Henson boosts crowd excitement with a heartwarming monologue- ’22

The actress kicked off the BET Awards 2022 with a heartwarming and uplifting monologue, praising the beautiful audience members and Black excellence in attendance.

She told viewers, “We’re going to celebrate, recognize, and honor us and everything that we do … let tonight be a reminder that we don’t need any other shows to give us accolades we can give out.”

Henson also got serious when addressing social issues like gun control, noting that “a weapon that can take life has more power than a woman that can give life if she chooses to.”

  • Yvette and Jody reunite at the BET Awards 2009

At the BET Awards 2009, fans were thrilled to witness a heartwarming reunion between Henson and her Baby Boy co-star Tyrese Gibson. The pair, who starred together in the 2001 cult classic film directed by the late John Singleton, shared a special moment on stage, reciting lines from the movie, reminding everyone of their incredible on-screen chemistry and lasting friendship.

  • Taraji asks the real HU to please come forward

Which university is considered the real HU? Is it Howard or Hampton? This burning question was posed by a Howard University alum while effortlessly slaying an all-black ensemble as Tarji hosted the BET Awards 2022.

Howard University and Hampton University, both historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs), have a longstanding yet friendly rivalry over which institution can rightfully claim the title of “the real HU.”

Henson was joined on stage by actor Carl Anthony Payne II and renowned choreographer and actress Debbie Allen, all fellow Howard alums. Together, they shouted out their peers and proudly claimed the title of the real HU for Howard.
