BET Awards 2022: Get to Know Demi Singleton a ‘Young Stars Award’ Nominee
Demi Singleton is an all-around star serving as an actress, singer, and dancer. The 15-year-old has made several television and movie appearances but is perhaps best known for her role in the crime television series Godfather of Harlem and her portrayal of the young Serena Williams in the critically acclaimed film King Richard, starring fellow BET Awards nominees Will Smith, Aunjanue Ellis, and Saniyya Sidney. For the upcoming BET Awards 2022, hosted by award-winning actress Taraji P. Henson live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, June 26th at 8 pm ET, the rising star is one of seven rising acts in Hollywood nominated for the “Young Stars Award,” but before we learn which rising Hollywood star will take home the honors, here’s a few fun facts about our lovely nominee.
She’s been on broadway
At 10-year-old, Demi made her Broadway debut in Andrew Lloyd Webber's School of Rock performing for nearly a year before joining Disney's The Lion King on Broadway as a young Nala.
Her studies of the arts began at an early age
After moving to New York when she was 3-years-old she began training in music, dance, and acting. She has also studied classical ballet and began playing the cello when she was just four.
She and her “King Richard” co-star share a sisterly bond
While talking to Seventeen Demi described her King Richard co-star and fellow “YoungStars Award” nominee Saniyya Sidney as “fun” and “like the older sister I never had.” The young actress revealed that she was the eldest of her siblings and that Saniyya “is truly amazing for putting up with my craziness, and I love her a lot.”
She’s looking to work with several female acting legends.
Though she has only just begun her acting career, Demi looks to work with Angelina Jolie, Lupita Nyongo, and Cynthia Erivo. However, she’s still hoping to collaborate with some more of her acting peers including burgeoning entertainment mogul Marsai Martin and Shahadi Wright Joseph.
She wants a career in music
In an older interview, the actress and aspiring singer shared that she most looks forward to releasing music “Music is something I’ve always been passionate about, and I haven’t really been able to shine a light on that part of my life, so I’m really thrilled to share what I’ve been working on.” She added, “I’m also really looking forward to producing in the future. I love to create, so being able to help make and share stories that resonate with me, help change the world, and possibly inspire people is something I’ve always been excited about.”
