Chief Justice Roberts to Preside Over Obama's Swearing-In
Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, who cast the deciding vote in favor of the Affordable Care Act last July, will deliver the oath of office to President Obama for his second term. Roberts also administered the oath to Obama in 2009.
This year, he'll perform the duty twice: first at a White House ceremony on Jan. 20, the date on which the Constitution mandates the term begin, and again on Jan. 21 at the public swearing-in.
“I will be honored to again stand on the Inaugural platform and take part in this important American tradition,” Obama said in a statement. “I look forward to having Chief Justice John Roberts administer my oath of office as we gather to celebrate not just a president or vice president, but the strength and determination of the American people.”
Hopefully, Roberts and Obama will both get it right this time around. The two stumbled over each other's words during the president's first swearing-in, prompting a do-over at the White House the following day.
Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor will administer the oath of office for Vice President Joe Biden. She'll be only the fourth woman to perform the duty for a president or vice president.
