Nipsey Hussle’s Brother And Crips Gang Could Land In Court For ‘The Marathon Continues’ Trademark

Here's what we know about the dual filings so far.

Nipsey Hussle’s older brother, Samiel Asghedom (also known as Blacc Sam) legal claim over his brother’s “The Marathon Continues” slogan might be brought before a federal court.

  • According to court documents obtained by The Blast, Blacc Sam filed his trademark application on May 28 to assume ownership over copyright usage across a myriad of entertainment services and “charitable activities and the doing of good deeds for others and the promotion of ethical and character values.”

Twelve days before that, the Crips had already filed their own paperwork on May 16, through their holding company. In their filed application, the Crips are aiming to use the slogan to promote charitable events and gang intervention efforts alongside entertainment purposes such as televised appearances, boxing contests, and a reality based television program.

  • Blacc Sam is currently in the process of assuming control over the late rapper’s estate, which is reportedly worth $2 million according to TMZ. The 33-year-old died without a will in place.

  • "The Marathon Continues” became widely popular following Nipsey’s tragic death as a moniker of his legacy. The rapper named two of his mixtapes and his TMC clothing brand after the phrase. Ahead of his passing, Nipsey was working on a number of business opportunities, including new music. Puma also recently announced that they were pushing forward with a collaboration Nipsey signed onto before his passing.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark office will have to review dual filings and legally sort out who can profit off of the “The Marathon Continues.”
