DJ Mehdi Dead at 34
DJ Mehdi, the French DJ and producer for the influential dance music label Ed Banger Records, has died suddenly at the young age of 34. According to reports the music man accidentally fell from a rooftop.
Mehdi, who rose to prominence amid the late '90s electronic dance music boom in Europe, was well regarded as a producer and remix artist. His long list of collaborators includes Daft Punk, Chromeo and K-OS as well as remixes for hip hop luminaries Busta Rhymes and Ghostface Killah. He joined Ed Banger Records, also home to Justice and Chromeo, in 2006 and released his last solo album, Lucky Boy, the same year.
Mehdi last performed in the U.S. at a Labor Day block party hosted by Fools Gold Records, the label founded by his friend and fellow DJ A-Trak. On Twitter today, friends of the late artist expressed their sorrow.
A-Trak: “I have no words. My heart is completely shattered. Not this.”
Chromeo: “We lost our brother. No words.”
Drake: “Damn...RIP MEHDI”
Just Blaze: “I'm literally shaking right now. We just played together last week. Heart goes out to his family and loved ones. RIP mehdi.”
