Mary J. Blige Is Not Here For Fans Calling Her ‘Auntie’: ‘Please Don’t
For many years now, fans have endearingly bestowed upon Mary J. Blige the honorific title of “Auntie,” as a sign of respect for the R&B legend.
Hailed as Queen of Hip Hop Soul, the Yonkers-born singer has left her mark on R&B and hip-hop with an illustrious career spanning decades. Mary J. Blige's impact and contributions to the music world have made her a universal "Auntie" to many.
But, in a recent interview, Mary J. Blige shared her thoughts on the matter. She recently did a virtual sit down with Hip Hollywood amid promotions for the Starz spin-off Power Book II: Ghost, which is slated to hit television in September.
During the conversation, Mary J. Blige was asked how she felt about her fans calling her “Auntie.” The songstress admits that she’s not a big fan of the term of endearment.
“Why can’t I just be a sister? There are women that are like, way older than me calling me ‘Auntie.’ C’mon,” the 49-year-old said. “Can I just be your sister? Your friend in your head? The auntie is like, C’mon.”
The singer added, “Not if you’re ten years older than me. Please don’t call me auntie. I’ll be your sister.”
