Jessie T. Usher Chats About Dating and False Friends
Jessie T. Usher has returned to television as basketball star Cam Calloway in the LeBron James-produced series Survivor’s Remorse. The comedy features Cam and his family as they get a handle on their new lifestyle after signing with a pro basketball team. Turns out Usher might have a few things in common with his character and learning the ropes of his surge in popularity.
“It wasn’t super drastic. I feel that with Cam, he sort of just got dropped into the deep end of things. He was sort of a nobody and then all of a sudden, he’s the most known player in basketball,” Usher told MadameNoire. “With me, I’ve been doing acting for so long, so it was sort of a gradual experience.”
The actor says his family and friends who’ve been there from the start are the people who keep him grounded, which is important when his celebrity status brings faux friends to the yard.
“It is what it is. It comes with the territory,” Usher said. “For the most part, I expected it. As soon as the press release came out about Survivor’s Remorse, even going to the gym was a whole new experience. All of a sudden, everybody knows who I am, and everyone wants to talk and say hi. It’s flattering in a way. It’s humbling in other ways. At the same time, it can be kind of annoying.”
The 23-year-old added that he hasn’t seen much change in his dating situation and that carrying a relationship would be difficult with his current schedule. Not only is he the star of the Starz drama, he’s also the lead in the Independence Day sequel set to drop next summer. But the young man’s dreams extend past those cameras pointed at him.
“As far as long-term aspirations, other than acting, I do want to direct a little bit. I want to get on the production side and eventually start a production company and maybe make some projects of my own,” he said.
