Cop Indicted on Murder Charges for Death of Samuel Dubose, Video Released
University of Cincinnati Officer Ray Tensing has turned himself in after being indicted on murder charges in the killing of Samuel Dubose, a 43-year-old African-American man who was shot in the head on July 19. The video of the incident was released Wednesday.
Dubose was pulled over after Tensing saw him driving without a front license plate.
Dubose's mother is relieved that the truth surrounding her son's case has been brought to light. "I just thank God that everything is being revealed," Audrey DuBose told reporters. "I knew that he loved my child. I knew that this was not going uncovered."
His sister Terina Allen said, “If it were not for that video camera, Sam would be no different that all of those other incidents.”
"It was a senseless [and] asinine shooting," Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said Wednesday at a press conference after meeting with the family of Dubose. Footage from Tensing's body camera was played during conference and showed the Tensing and Dubose encounter.
Tensing fired a shot and struck Dubose in the head. "He was dead instantly," Deters said of Dubose. Deters added that the murder charge will be backed with a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter.
The University of Cincinnati canceled classes amid the announcement of the indictment. The institution is planning an independent review of its policies, following the shooting.
