After just returning to the New York Mets on July 7 following his completion of an 80-game performance-enhancing drugs suspension, pitcher Jenrry Mejia clearly didn't learn his lesson.

The Mets reliever was suspended for 162 games by Major League Baseball on Tuesday following his second positive test result for PED use.

"Not surprisingly, there's a tremendous amount of disappointment — I think to some extent anger, to some extent amazement — that this could happen so soon after a previous suspension was completed. And some sadness," Mets general manager Sandy Alderson told ESPN, adding that he was "totally shocked" about Mejia's second positive PED test. "This is having a tremendously adverse effect on a very promising major league career, and that's a shame. But the rules are the rules. We support the rules. This is the consequence of making bad choices."

Mejia, 25, had thrown 7 1/3 scoreless innings since his July 12 return to mound for the Mets.

Fortunately, the Mets have a solid rotation and bolstered its bullpen with the acquisition of setup man Tyler Clippard from the Oakland Athletics this week.

At 52-48, the Mets are just a game back of the Washington Nationals in the NL East division and currently three games behind in the Wild Card race.
