Normani’s ‘Motivation’ Video Takes Us Back To Early 2000s

See Kelly Rowland, Ciara and Ariana Grande’s reactions to it all.

Normani has officially arrived. At midnight on Thursday (Aug. 15), the former Fifth Harmony singer dropped a music video for her first single, “Motivation,” off her upcoming debut album.

  • The song, co-written with pop’s reigning princess Ariana Grande (with whom Normani also recently toured), marks her first non-collab release after her 2018 smash hit with Sam Smith, “Dancing With a Stranger” and her previous chart-topping run with Khalid on “Love Lies,” which hit triple-platinum.

For the past two years, Normani has accumulated a steady string of hits but hasn’t dropped a single of her own where her talent is front and center — until now. Fans patiently waited, and now Normani has delivered.

Normani recently revealed to Rolling Stone, “I shot the video probably a month ago. It’s going to be worth the wait… It’s an upbeat [song]. It’s a feel good record. I think that everybody will really love it. It was the first opportunity that I had to have fun.”

  • The music video is a picture-perfect homage to the early-aughts pop and R&B that is the throwback of throwbacks.

It artfully blends together a myriad of imagery from the various pop icons that have inspired and paved the way for Normani. The visual begins with a throwback of a young ‘Mani rushing home after school to catch BET’s 106 & Park before it cuts to present day. Normani’s deep tenor just melts you down like the summer heat. She served killer vocals and choreography on a silver platter.

Between twerking on a fence, transitioning from a handstand into the splits (YASS MA’AM!!) and strutting down an empty street in ripped jeans and a white tank-top like Beyoncé in “Crazy in Love,” ‘Mani thoroughly shut it down as she danced through the streets of Los Angeles. It’s the perfect mix of millenial’s nostalgic memories putting Normani’s talent on full display.

  • The video is currently the No. 2 trending video on YouTube and sitting at No. 3 on Apple Music.

The internet is in full-on stan mode, celebrities included. On behalf of the Black community, Kehlani has already marked Normani as the next “superstar triple-threat” that is wholly ours.

“I love this normani movement cuz we ain’t had our own superstar triple threat girl to stan over as a generation. we grew up on them but she’s OURS. and she’s BLACK mwuahahahaYES,” she wrote on Twitter. Ariana penned that she was “so proud” of her ‘Mani as more praise from a number of industry peers poured in for the Houston native.

“Enjoy this special moment. My heart is so full for u!” she penned.
