Fantasia Barrino Discusses How She Survived An Overdose in 2010
Fantasia Barrino is reflecting on a harrowing moment when her strength was tested.
During an interview with Variety for the publication's "The Power of Women" issue, the singer opened up on an overdose she survived in 2010, as reported by PEOPLE.
At that time, she said it felt like the weight of the world was upon her. She was taking care of her family financially. As a result, Barrino overdosed on aspirin and a sleep aid because she "just wanted the noise to stop."
Leading up to that, the "Truth Is" singer had won the reality singing competition "American Idol" in 2004 and was experiencing acclaim for her debut album. Then, in 2006, she published her memoir, "Life Is Not A Fairytale," but was sued by her father due to how he was depicted in it.
After being revived in the hospital following surviving the overdose, she encountered a nurse who spoke life into her, telling Barrino she was "strong."
“Don’t you come back in here no more. You fight," she remembered the nurse telling her.
Today, her perspective has evolved.
“I don’t care if it gets ugly again,” she noted. “I don’t care if there’s storms. I realized I have the spirit of an eagle. They fly over storms.”
She continued, "I left that hospital and said, ‘I’ll never do that again, because I have purpose,’” she shared. “I’m going to speak into every young person’s life and tell them, ‘Don’t you dare give up.’”
Barrino –who will soon appear in the much-anticipated film adaptation of "The Color Purple" musical in December– also said her husband, Kendall Taylor, has helped shift her worldview.
“I’m so HAPPY — in all caps — and I never thought I would have that,” she added.
Barrino and Taylor exchanged vows in 2015. They welcomed a baby girl, Keziah Taylor, in May 2021. The singer is also mom to son Dallas Xavier Barrino, 11, and 22-year-old Zion Quari from previous relationships.
