Serena Williams Hints At A Return To Tennis
In August, Serena Williams broke the internet when she said in a Vogue interview that she intends to “evolve away” from tennis, appearing to indicate that she was retiring. However, Williams may not be done with making history on the court.
On September 2, the 41-year-old sensation played what many believed to be her last match at New York’s Arthur Ashe Stadium for the U.S. Open. She lost in a three-set defeat to Ajla Tomljanovic. During a recent discussion at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference, Williams told TechCrunch Editor-in-Chief Jordan Crook, "It was really great because I didn't really even think about the whole retirement—I still haven't really thought about it. But I did wake up the other day and I went on the court and I was like, 'Oh, for the first time I'm on the court and I'm not playing for competition.' And it was really weird."
Cook asked about the Vogue interview and she clarified, "Well, I'm not retired.”
"It sounded like you were on the fence about it at the U.S. Open," Crook remarked. "I know you haven't thought about it... but what are the chances we see you play again?"
"The chances are very high," Williams responded. Nonetheless, she stressed family was priority, "But at the same time, I'm so happy. I really want my daughter and my family to be ahead of me. It's interesting how women think, and I like that we think that way and I think that's what makes us so special.”
The 23-time Grand Slam champion attended the TechCrunch Disrupt conference to discuss her investment firm Serena Ventures. The firm focuses on health, wellness and athletics, and has raised $111 million over the past year, according to CBS News.
