Mariah Carey Reveals She’s Back at Work After The Passing of Mom and Sister
Mariah Carey revealed she’s back to work after the passing of her mom and sister last month.
“Back at work. It’s been a couple of rough weeks, but I appreciate everyone’s love and support so much and I can’t wait to see my fans in China & Brazil. Love you!” the singer captioned an Instagram video of her in rehearsals.
Mariah’s post marks her return to social media just weeks after losing her mom, Patricia, and sister, Alison, on the same day.
At the time of their passing, the five-time Grammy Award-winner released a statement to reporters saying, "My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day. I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed. I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time."
The causes of their deaths remain unknown. Mariah, who inherited her vocal abilities from Patricia, 87, a former opera singer and vocal coach, opened up about their complex relationship in her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey. The “We Belong Together” hitmaker shared that their bond brought her significant pain and confusion throughout her life.
"Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities. It's never been only black-and-white — it's been a whole rainbow of emotions," she wrote. "Our relationship is a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment. A complicated love tethers my heart to my mother's."
Mariah also dedicated a portion of the memoir to Patricia. "And to Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could. I will love you the best I can, always," she added. Her relationship with her sister, Alison, was also strained. In her memoir, she revealed that she had become estranged from both Alison and her brother, Morgan, explaining that maintaining distance from them was "emotionally and physically safer" for her.
