Lizzo Responds To Backlash About Her Derriere-Baring Outfit At The Lakers Game

Boom.

Lizzo is remaining unbothered by her body critics, and her attitude toward the latest stir-up over her most recent wardrobe pick is no different.

  • On Monday (December 9), the “Truth Hurts” artist was one of Twitter’s top trending names after her choice of a derriere-baring getup that she wore (and worked!) to the Los Angeles’ Lakers vs. Minnesota Timberwolves game over the weekend.

  • As online backlash mounted, the dress set off a fierce debate across Twitter about acceptable body standards in certain outfits. On one side of the criticism, some argued against the look under the defense that it was inappropriate given the family-friendly setting of the NBA game.

Others felt that the criticism had more to do with Lizzo’s unrelenting acceptance and confidence as a plus-size woman. Hearkening back to her critics’ history with fat-shaming, her supporters also chimed in to note how plus-size body types are far more policed in comparison to smaller figures.

  • Taking to Instagram, Lizzo shared her thoughts on the uproar where she issued the perfect response to those detractors

“Who I am and the essence of me and the things that I choose to do as a grown a** woman can inspire you to do the same. You don’t have to be like me. You need to be like you and never ever let somebody stop you or shame you from being yourself,” she proclaimed in an Instagram Live session.

  • She continued, “This is who I’ve always been. Now, everybody’s looking at it and your criticism can just remain your criticism. Your criticism has no effect on me. Negative criticism has no stake in my life, no control over my life [and] emotions. I’m the happiest I’ve ever been. I’m surrounded by love and I just want to spread that love and also spread these cheeks.”

As far anyone still riding Lizzo for simply being herself, she simply had this to say: “If you really, really don’t like my a**, you can kiss it. ‘Cause kissing it makes it go away, I promise.”

    #Period.
