Exclusive: Jhene Aiko Reveals The Beauty Secrets She's Sharing With Her 10-year-old Daughter, Nami, To Ensure Flawless Skin
If you’re a fan of makeup and a fan of Jhene Aiko, her latest collaboration with Kat Von D Beauty will make your day!
Get excited because the angelic songstress, whose skin is so radiant it glows like a halo, has become the new global ambassador for Kat Von D Beauty’s True Portrait Foundation.
BET caught up with the R&B songbird ahead of the U.S. launch of the line. While this partnership seems to be unexpected for many, Jhene revealed that she’s been a longtime fan of the brand.
“I love the brand. It was like a no brainer to work with them. I love that they're cruelty free, and they’re Vegan. It was so much fun working on the campaign and the ASMR commercial. Kat Von D Beauty has a wide variety of models and representation. They celebrate of all different types of women.”
Being in the music industry since age 13, Jhene was introduced to make-up very young. Although she had a love for it when watching her older sisters and mom apply their make-up, she didn’t start wearing it until she started singing professionally.
“Once I started singing professionally when I was 13, I felt like I needed to put on a little makeup. It used to look horrible though! But I didn’t know any better. I was younger and they would just do whatever. So I'd be like, ‘Oh, I guess I just look crazy with makeup on'.”
Jhene has a 10-year-old daughter, Nami, who we’ve seen glimpses of thanks to social media. But Jhene makes it clear that although she allows her daughter to play in make-up at home, real beauty lies within.
“My daughter is very creative. I’ll come home and there’s make-up everywhere. She’ll try and hide it from me, but I allow her play in it while we’re home. She’s starting to have her first break-outs, so I make sure that she drinks lots of water, eats her vegetables and washes her face. But I instill in her that real beauty shines from within, and she’s beautiful without make-up.”
Jhene knows that the internet can be a crazy place so she doesn’t allow her daughter to have social media.
“She’s going to be 11 this year and a lot of her friends at school have phones, but I don’t allow it. No internet or social media. She likes to draw and write, so I’ll ask her to make something for me, and I do allow her to play the Sims game, but not online. And I keep her with me as much as possible while I’m traveling and when she’s on school breaks,” Jhene explains.
As busy women, we get so caught up in our day-to-day lives and taking care of everyone else instead of putting ourselves first. Self-care and self-love go hand-in-hand. So when we asked Jhene how she practices self-care, as a form of self-love, she simply said, “I take naps, even if it’s for 20 minutes, it really makes a difference in my mood. I drink lots of water, exercise probably like once or twice a week, and just breathing mindfully throughout the day.”
For Jhene, mindfulness is a way a way of life. She recently released a meditation song, 'Trigger Protection Mantra,' as a follow up to chart topping song, 'Triggered.' She says, “The song ‘Triggered’ is me expressing the anger and the frustration part of it, but the ‘Protection Mantra’ is how you deal with that."
The song was intentionally made to heal and align your chakras and Jhene says, “Each key resonates with different chakras. I first started with the sound bowl to heal your root chakras which is your foundation. I played it for an hour straight. I was in a trance and, by the end, I was much more calm. From there, it was a free flow and I just sort of zoned out.”
Jhene uses her platform to break down stigmas on mental health, a topic that she’s been very vocal about. Being in the public eye, in a public relationship, she exposes so much of herself. Although she is vulnerable and has painstakenly been critized, Jhene doesn’t mind it and chooses to be transparent with her supporters.
“I love to share my journey. In reality we are all so much alike then we are different, and all you have to do is just listen to a stranger’s story and you'll find so many things that resonates with you. I talk about what helps me and hopefully it can help someone else.”
She continues, “I started sound healing because I wanted something that didn’t have side effects (laughs), I didn’t want prescription medicine, so I hope my journey can inspire someone else.”
For fans who are wondering when Jhene will be releasing new music, she revealed that an entire project of sound healing will be coming in the near future.
