The Internet Is At War After Jhene Aiko Reveals How She Began Dating Big Sean
After hilariously letting the entire world of Instagram in on her bedroom banter with boyfriend and Detroit emcee Big Sean, R&B songstress Jhene Aiko drew back the curtain even more on the juicy details of their intimate relationship.
Jhene sat down with Dotty on BBC Radio 1 Xtra and dished on how one of R&B and hip-hop’s favorite lovebird duos came to be. She recalled that they met and became friends in 2012, the year that her brother passed away and the same year her and Sean created their first, pre-TWENTY88 collaborations: “Beware” and “I’m Gonna Be.”
Thereafter, she said Sean asked her out on a date to a basketball game. Though Jhene admitted that she had a boyfriend at the time, the two only went as friends. Plus, she’d taking a friendly liking to Sean, she’d never been courtside to a game and she didn’t hide it from her then-boyfriend, either. Jhene was also in the middle of a break-up, she added, but because she was technically still a taken woman, she assured that she did not disrespect her relationship.
Still, a blog took their friendly outing and ran with it, posting a flick of the two from the game and naming her Big Sean's “Latino girlfriend.” To ensure that the rumor didn’t stretch too far, Jhene said she took to Twitter to clarify that they weren’t dating, as she didn’t want to upset her former boyfriend. However, they had already broken up for reasons much bigger than her platonic basketball game outing.
“We didn’t break up because of Sean,” she stated. “We broke up for other reasons because he was married. Secretly. I didn’t know—he was married to his baby’s mother. They hadn’t been together, but he wouldn’t give her a divorce. And I found this out because she told me.”
Understandably, Jhene said her trust in him was shot after the situation, and she made herself available for the I Decided emcee. Sean did feel a certain way about her aforementioned tweet, however, but she held true to her integrity that they honestly weren’t dating at the time. After she officially cut things off with her previous relationship, it was still a timing issue that kept her and Sean from getting to that point as well because he was no longer single. A couple break-ups and a perfect timing window later, and the two have finally made their way back to each other.
Now that the internet has gotten their hands on the story, the truth has been spun out of context, and Twitter is divided into two sections: the real news, and the fake. But, not if Jhene has anything to say about it, which she classily and thoroughly addressed as well.
