Serena Williams Credits Her Mom For Supporting Family After Dad Quit His Job
Serena and Venus Williams have joined Will Smith for an upcoming sit-down for Red Table Talk, where the sisters discuss their new film King Richard, which premieres on Nov. 19 in theaters and on HBO Max.
At one point in the episode, premiering on Wednesday (Nov. 17), Serena recalls how their mother, Oracene Price, solely supported their family of seven when their father Richard WIlliams quit his job to focus on being their tennis coach.
"My dad at one point was working and then, he stopped," she says in the exclusive clip obtained by PEOPLE. "He's like, 'This is what we're going to do. I'm not going to have a job. I'm gonna go with Venus and Serena, and train them every day.' Now that would be impossible for me if my husband [Alexis Ohanian] were to tell me that."
The superstar sisters were joined at the red table with their mother and her daughter Isha and Lyndrea Price, Serena and Venus’ half-sisters. Their eldest half-sister Yetunde Price was tragically killed in 2003.
Price, who is portrayed in the biopic by actress Aunjanue Ellis, was also Serena and Venus' tennis coach. Venus and Serena won 149 titles, including 44 Grand Slams and four Olympic gold medals.
"They had goals in mind. I saw them working so hard, and they never ever complained," Price told Today in an interview in 2019 about her daughters' work ethic. "[There were] It was a lot of naysayers saying that they're not gonna make it, but I never thought they wouldn't."
