Dr. Dre on Brutal Dee Barnes Attack: 'I Was Out of My F**king Mind'
As promised, another apology from superproducer and rap magnate Dr. Dre to journalist Dee Barnes for his violent attack on her at a party is happened, and has been long overdue for about 26 years now.
Even though N.W.A’s Straight Outta Compton biopic skipped over such a pivotal event in Dre’s career, The Defiant Ones has made up for it with the apology and a lesson to be learned straight from his mouth.
The four-part docuseries chronicling the important industry life and times of Dre and Jimmy Iovine premiered on HBO on Sunday (July 9) and even dropped off some new music from the 52-year-old. During the second installment of the series, however, Dre got brutally honest on the brutal assault that took place at a party in California.
"Any man that puts his hands on a female is a f**king idiot," Dre expressed in his private interview. "He's out of his f**king mind, and I was out of my f**king mind at the time. I f**ked up, I paid for it, I'm sorry for it and I apologize for it."
He then describes the “dark cloud” that he believes will follow him for the rest of his life and will “blemish who [he] is as a man” as well. The gloom he alludes to could be his highly publicized past of violence against women, which Barnes called out in a Gawker thinkpiece after the release of Straight Outta Compton. Explaining the incident, in which Dre attacked her for an interview she did with his fellow former N.W.A member Ice Cube, she spotlighted the film’s failure to include his violent past against her and other women.
Though she consequently responded to criticism that she was looking for her own 15 minutes of fame off of the film’s box office success, Barnes released another response to his previous New York Times apology.
“I hope he meant it,” she responded in her follow-up. “I hope he represents these words in his life. I hope that after all these years, he really is a changed man. Dr. Dre has matured, and the women he’s hurt, including myself, have endured. I’m proud to be able to say goodbye to the man who at one point was straight outta f**ks to give, as he consistently dismissed and disrespected any mention of his assault history.”
Hopefully, she holds the same sentiment on his latest apology to her as well.
