Watch: Trailer for Malcolm Washington’s ‘The Piano Lesson’
The trailer for “The Piano Lesson,” directed and co-written by Malcolm Washington, teases a rich cinematic take on August Wilson's celebrated play. With a powerhouse cast led by John David Washington, Samuel L. Jackson, and “The Harder They Fall” star Danielle Deadwyler, the film revisits a family's turbulent struggle over a prized heirloom: a carved piano embedded with deep ancestral history.
The synopsis reveals, "A battle is brewing in the Charles Household. At the center stands a prized heirloom piano, tearing two siblings apart. On one side, a brother (Washington) plans to build the family fortune by selling it. On the other, a sister (Deadwyler) will go to any lengths to hold onto the sole vestige of the family’s heritage. Their uncle (Jackson) tries to mediate, but even he can’t hold back the ghosts of the past."
Produced by Oscar nominee Todd Black and Academy Award actor Denzel Washington—who previously directed “Fences” (2016) and produced “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”—the film promises a stirring blend of tradition, tension, and generational conflict.
The ensemble cast also features Ray Fisher, Michael Potts, Corey Hawkins, and Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter Erykah Badu. “The Piano Lesson” begins streaming on Netflix on November 22 and will also have limited theater showings.
