Dave Chappelle Banana Assailant Tells Court He's No Racist
The man accused of throwing a banana peel at comedian Dave Chappelle during a performance in Santa Fe earlier this year had his day in court today, and he wants everyone to know he's not racist. In fact, he hired a Black attorney to make his point.
Christian Englander is facing charges of disturbing the peace and battery after the fruit-throwing incident in March. He was allegedly drunk at the time. On Monday, his lawyer, Rod Thompson, argued that prosecutors don't have any witnesses for their charges, and if they intend to press them, then Chappelle himself should be required to testify.
Thompson also reiterated that his client's disrespectful action was in no way racially motivated. Chappelle, understandably, was not available for comment on the case and we doubt he'll be heading back to Santa Fe to testify anytime soon. Englander may get off lucky on this one, but moving forward he should keep his fruit to himself.
