The Ladies Of 'Kingdom Business' Discuss The Soundtrack For Season Two
“Kingdom Business” may have wrapped its season with the finale dropping on BET+ last Thursday, but it doesn’t mean you can’t spend the holidays binging and catching up on all the action with the Jordan family.
The series returned in November, with the ensemble cast returning to the series for more scandalous drama and musical ventures that tend to keep the family and their surroundings in trouble they didn’t seem to look for. For those who haven’t watched the second season yet, this season will see “the scandalous antecedent events of lust, love, and denial have caused a kingdom in chaos,” according to the press release.
“In defense of their faith-filled legacy, the Jordan family fights for their gospel record label, their positions in the church, and even their lives. All the while, disgraced gospel phenom, Rbel, struggles to secure justice for Dani and escape her own demons. As family members reunite, new alliances form, and old secrets surface...Rbel searches for answers, and Denita battles to retain her gospel throne.”
BET.com was able to catch up with the women of the cast ahead of the finale to discuss the soundtrack for the second season and how their characters find their voices.
BET.com: The music is a key part in the series — can you share how the soundtrack helps move along the story for the second season
Yolanda Adams: The music is an impeccable part of the show because we’re not just throwing music in – it’s partnering with the script and the scene to clarify what needs to happen in the storyline. Something happens when you bring in a song to solidify and stamp the point you’re trying to get across and the moment when the song comes through, it’s at a time when someone is connecting with the character and you can feel that. The soundtrack amplifies what’s going on and is perfect – it’s a tie-in that allows us as the actors to give people the buy-in to watch every Thursday.
BET.com: Everyone is looking to find their voice and footing again as things are shifting everyone’s lives a bit — how will your character navigate this season as they look to find their voice?
Loretta Divine: My first chance to sing on the show was an acapella number and then after that, they let me sing ‘Amazing Grace’ as well on the series. It always feels good to sing, especially when singing gospel. With this show, you have the battle of all kinds of music and we may end up singing rap or jazz so you never know when you’re working with the music composers or Yolanda and [Tamar Braxton] whose voice can do anything.
Serayah: The cool characteristic of the music and my character’s voice, Rebel, mixing in with my individuality makes me emotional – everytime I work with the [Kirk Franklin] on the music for the show, there’s a lot of spiritual battles I have also faced in comparison to my character. Sometimes, I tell him I don’t want to go there and it’s like therapy because he encourages me to go there.
