Lil’ Kim And DaBaby Wear Custom Dapper Dan x Gucci Looks To The 2019 Hip Hop Awards

Dapper Dan is Black fashion's greatest treasure.

Being the style influencer that Lil' Kim is, we didn’t expect anything less from the Queen of Rap at the 2019 BET Hip Hop Awards. She always brings her A-game when it comes to her outfit.

As the recipient of the coveted I Am Hip Hop Award, Kim stepped onto the carpet pretty in a custom metallic pink tuxedo dress designed by Dapper Dan x Gucci with her tiny waist cinched with a diamond-encrusted Gucci belt and white Gucci platform heels.

Dapper Dan rose to prominence during the 1980s and 1990s as a designer in Harlem, quickly becoming a staple in the hip-hop community by designing looks for LL Cool J and Salt-N-Pepa, along with Eric B. & Rakim.

A few years ago, when Gucci was called out for copying Dan’s designs, the designer had a series of talks with the company that eventually manifested into a partnership. When Dan spoke to Alessandro Michele, the trailblazing designer credited with revamping Gucci, he told him that if Black culture is going to be copied, then people of color need to have a seat at the table.

"When people appropriate our culture, they make mistakes," he tells the show's hosts. "So my approach to them was, 'You got to have us in the room. We got to be a part of this so these things don't happen.'"

As a modern leader of the Harlem Renaissance cultural moment, Dap is still designing for hip-hop’s biggest acts today. After a few rappers decided to boycott Gucci due to behaviors that were deemed insensitive, Dap made it his business to start a diversity and inclusion council with the luxury fashion house.

DaBaby won Best New Artist at the awards donning in a custom red Dapper Dan x Gucci sleeveless tuxedo, with the red and green Gucci fedora and matching sneakers.

The North Carolina rapper posted a video on his Instagram alongside Dapper Dan at his Atelier in Harlem prior to the awards. He shared footage of Dan's studio, with the caption reading, "Pulled up on da OG."
