Kendrick Lamar Reveals His Current Favorite Artist
Which Odd Future member is K Dot's inspiration?
Kendrick Lamar's sophomore album To Pimp a Butterfly is on seemingly everyone's Top 10 list this year, but which artist is giving K Dot his inspiration?
During a recent Twitter Q&A with fans, Lamar revealed that Earl Sweatshirt is his favorite artist right now. The Odd Future emcee also recently dropped his second studio album, I Don't Like S**t, I Don't Go Outside to critical acclaim.
It seems the admiration is mutual. In an interview with Grantland last week, Earl also praised his fellow Left Coast native.
“Whatever nuances I’m not feeling with a Kendrick [Lamar]–type album, I’m still so thankful for his position because he’s doing that work so that fools like me can still find myself,” he said.
“I just don’t do it in the same way as Kendrick,” Earl continued. “Kendrick is so explicit in the way that that n**** writes. Like, it’s so explicit. He’s the opposite of mystery; everything is fully spelled out. But it’s in [an] Everyman’s language. You can really, really understand it. It’s sophisticated but it doesn’t take a lot to understand what he’s talking about. And everyone can read it, so it’s like … it gives me room to find myself.”
Needless to say, Earl and Kendrick are two of the most exciting artists in hip hop right now. Hopefully, this love fest will lead to a collaboration between the Cali kings soon.
