To this day, Kanye West’s abrupt meeting with Donald Trump rubbed a few folks the wrong way, along with their strange friendship that no one quite knew existed.

But though hip-hop’s overt rap activist Killer Mike has publicly called out both Hillary Clinton and Trump, he believes Yeezy’s Trump Tower meetup happens to have more substance for the Black community than some may realize.

Alongside his Run the Jewels crew member El-P, the two weighed in on political talk with the U.K.’s Channel 4 News as the reporter asked for their thoughts on Ye’s surprise meeting with Trump.

El-P seemed to fall back from the question, leaving the floor to Killer Mike, who said that it actually didn’t bother him.

“Black people shouldn’t have permanent friends or enemies, they should have permanent interest,” the Atlanta native replied. Discussing Martin Luther King Jr.’s meeting with Governor George Wallace, an open advocate of segregation and opposer of Dr. King’s equality-driven principles during his time in office, Mike added that such exchanges are necessary. He does, however, feel that musicians and other entertainers who are somewhat disconnected from politics are not as important as those who are active in the socio-political circle. Citing NFL legend Jim Brown, who Mike pointed out has fought against oppression for many years, there’s more significant meetings he’s been concerned with.

“[Brown] sitting with President Trump was a significant thing for me, because I know on the other side of the table, he was telling the truth,” Mike said.
