Kerry Washington on Portraying Major Charity Adams and Honoring Black Women’s Legacy
Kerry Washington is no stranger to embodying powerful, trailblazing women on screen, and her latest role in Tyler Perry’s "Six Triple Eight" is no exception. The Netflix film, premiering December 20, tells the remarkable true story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, an all-Black, all-female unit that broke racial and gender barriers during World War II. Washington stars as Major Charity Adams, the battalion’s commanding officer and the first African American woman to serve as an officer in the Women’s Army Corps.
For Washington, portraying Adams was a chance to honor the unsung heroines of history. “Charity Adams and the women of the 6888th were extraordinary,” Washington shares with BET. “They accomplished so much under such challenging circumstances. To step into her shoes and tell this story is a privilege and a responsibility.”
Known for her unforgettable performance as Olivia Pope in "Scandal," Washington has built a career on playing complex, resilient women. From her roles in "Confirmation" to "Little Fires Everywhere," her work consistently centers narratives that amplify the voices of marginalized communities. With "Six Triple Eight," she brings her commanding presence and nuanced storytelling to a project that celebrates the overlooked contributions of Black women.
“I don’t really pick my characters through a lens of advocacy or civic engagement,” Washington explains. “I center myself as an artist and allow myself to tell stories where Black people and women are at the heart of them. That alone is seen as a political act because we’ve marginalized those voices for so long. But everything is political, from where you live to the rights you have over your body. These are the stories that matter.”
Washington’s co-star, Ebony Obsidian, praises her as an inspiration both on and off screen. “Kerry has always been someone I’ve admired,” Obsidian says. “Her ability to lead with grace and strength is something I aspire to emulate.”
"Six Triple Eight" also offered Washington the opportunity to reflect on her personal values. Known for her faith and dedication, she says, “My one non-negotiable rule in life is to put God first. That’s the foundation for everything I do.”
As Major Charity Adams, Washington captures the determination, intelligence, and resilience of a woman who led her battalion to overcome systemic prejudice and accomplish the impossible. With Perry’s direction and Washington’s powerhouse performance, "Six Triple Eight" is more than a war story—it’s a testament to the enduring strength of Black women who have shaped history, often without acknowledgment.
Washington is clear about the significance of the film’s timing. “This story couldn’t come at a better moment. Black women have always been the backbone of this country, uplifting communities while breaking barriers. It’s important to celebrate that legacy and remind everyone of the contributions we continue to make.”
