De La Soul Offers Up Entire Catalog for Free

Hip hop trio gives away music to commemorate 25th anniversary of their debut.

De La Soul just made Valentine's Day a little bit sweeter for hip hop fans. According to Rolling Stone, the group is offering up their entire catalog for free via their website wearedelasoul.com.

The 25-hour music giveaway (which started at 11 a.m. this morning and runs until tomorrow at noon) is in honor of the 25th anniversary of De La Soul's 3 Feet High and Rising debut.

"It's about allowing our fans who have been looking and trying to get a hold of our music to have access to it," De La member Posdnuos explained to RS. "It's been too long where our fans haven't had access to everything. This is our way of showing them how much we love them."

Site visitors have the choice of downloading all of De La Soul's releases — 3 Feet High and Rising, De La Soul Is Dead, Buhloone Mindstate, Stakes Is High, Art Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump, AOI: Bionix and The Grind Date — at once, or àla carte. Next, fans have to sign up for the group's "infrequent newsletters" before they can receive the music.

Free music is the first of more promotional steps for the De La Soul. Outdated contracts and legal red tape have stopped the group from putting their old music up on iTunes, but this year they are prepping a brand new line of projects. The string of releases includes a six-track EP produced by Pete Rock and DJ Premier, a song over an unheard J Dilla beat, and You're Welcome, their first studio album in a decade.

"We're just getting in the mode of constantly giving people new music," Posdnuos continued. "I'll be the first to say that not everyone can do it. You can put out a new mixtape every week, but it can dilute what you're putting out because you haven't had enough time to see what's going on with your life to write something from a different angle. With us, we've sat a long time without releasing an album. It's high time we start releasing a bunch of stuff because it's there."
