Cheryl Lynn’s Classic ‘Encore' Goes Viral On TikTok As Baltimore Ravens Make Playoff Run
The Baltimore Ravens have a new theme song, and it's one of R&B legend Cheryl Lynn’s signature tracks.
Complex reports that her song “Encore” has experienced a streaming surge since November and much of the renewed popularity is due to Baltimore TikTok creating the #EncoreChallenge.
Taking to X (formerly X), Lynn endorsed her song still being danced to by a new generation 40 years after its initial release.
“Brings me joy. 50 years of musical service I’ve given, and to see it pour out into people that genuinely enjoy it, there’s no better feeling,” Lynn wrote. “Thank you 41 years later, y’all still killing it to this jam. XOXO.”
According to Music Data, an account on X (formerly Twitter) that tracks the latest statistics on streaming, “Encore” increased more than 30,000 streams on Spotify in just 24 hours on Nov. 7, 2023, and has grown 10% in sales/streams in total.
Not only is Lynn enjoying the song's resurgence, but because of her business acumen, she reaps the benefits of her intellectual property.
Responding to an X user who said that she probably doesn’t see any of the profits from her music, Lynn wrote, “I own my masters so the royalties are lovely. “Have been for over 35 years.”
Originally released in 1983 and written and produced by the iconic duo Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, the track was the opener of her fifth album Preppie.
An instant classic in Black dance clubs, house parties, and a must-have on every cookout playlist till this day, “Encore” went to number one on the R&B chart, number six on the US Dance chart, and peaked at #69 on the Hot 100.
In addition to loving the #EncoreChallenge, Lynn made it abundantly clear that she is rooting for the Ravens to go to Super Bowl LVIII.
“Only rooting for the Ravens #RavensFlock “Let the Encore continue,” Lynn wrote.
