Allen Iverson: People Don't Really Know
Allen Iverson is one of the most gifted athletes to have ever stepped on an NBA court — and, arguably, the most misunderstood. Jail, tension with coaches, off-court misbehavior, a tumultuous relationship and, of course, what happened to his reported $200 million fortune are all topics on which fans have been seeking answers from The Answer for years.
Now, Iverson is ready to discuss all in his new documentary Iverson, set to air on Showtime Saturday night (May 16). The legend also stopped by CBS News on Friday to explain why he agreed to subject himself to scrutiny five years after ending his NBA career.
"People don't really know who I am," Iverson told Gayle King and Charlie Rose. "I'm judged by the idiot box and the newspaper."
Who is he, then? "I'm not the person everyone makes me out to be," he explains. "I'm a father, I'm a friend... I've got the biggest heart in the world. And sometimes that's a problem." With that last statement, Iverson could be addressing rumors that his family and friends pilfered through a big chunk of his earnings as an NBA player, or he could also be referencing his relationship with his sometimes-estranged wife Tawanna Turner. Though, he did tell CBS News that "my girl now was my girl then," indicating his Georgetown days.
